Gettysburg is a small town in south central Pennsylvania just a few short miles to the Maryland border. Gettysburg is well situated close to state route 15, and route 30 goes through the middle of town. There are a number of local roads that converge on the square in Gettysburg. It is somewhat of a crossroads town which is one of the reasons General Robert E. Lee choose it as the sight to stand and battle Union forces during the Battle of Gettysburg. The area consists of rolling hills, farm land, orchards, with small towns dotting the surrounding area. It is a quiet small town in winter and a bustling tourist area during the summer months.


The People

If you’re thinking of living in Gettysburg, PA, there are some things you’ll need to know about us. The population of Gettysburg, PA is roughly 7,500 people, within that population there are just under 3000 housing units, 22.5% of those housing units had children under the age of 18 living in them, 32.6% were married couples living together, and 42.5% of all households within the borough of Gettysburg was made up of individuals. The age demographics are 36.2% from the age of 18 to 24, 19.1% from the age 25 to 44, 15.9% age 45 to 64 and those over 65 years of age, were 12.5% of the total population of Gettysburg Borough.

The median income for a household in the borough of Gettysburg is $29,840; the median income per family is $40,489. Unemployment in the Gettysburg area is approximately 7.7%, with a state sales tax of 6%, and an income tax of the 3.6%, as well as a cost-of-living index of 97.7.


Gettysburg Attractions

The main industry in the borough Gettysburg is tourism surrounding used Oracle Battle of Gettysburg. Tourists arrive in the summer months from all over the world, tourism numbers for the borough of Gettysburg range from 1 to 3,000,000 per year. Popular tourist spots include the Gettysburg battlefield; during the dates of July 1 through the third battle reenactments of the famous 1863 battle of Gettysburg grow hundreds of thousands of people. Besides the Gettysburg battlefield, the National Park Service maintains the Eisenhower porn site, it is a popular destination and home and farm of the late president 20 Eisenhower. Other famous Gettysburg natives include Hall of Fame pitcher Eddie plank, a visit to Gettysburg eddies showcases the famous Hall of Fame pictures baseball achievements.


Schools

The Gettysburg area school district consists of the Gettysburg area high school, for grades nine through 12, with a population of approximately 1200 students. The Gettysburg area middle school for grades six through eight with a population of approximately 800 students. There are two elementary schools for grades kindergarten through third grade with a combined population of just under 600 students. There is a third elementary school for grades four through five with a population of just under 500 students. There are also a small knot of private schools in the area. There are three colleges in the Gettysburg area Gettysburg College, the Lutheran theological seminary, and the Harrisburg area community college.


Real Estate in Gettysburg

The Gettysburg real estate market like the national real estate market has seen a decrease in home values. However, the Gettysburg market never did see exceptionally high values, so there was little room to fall backwards. There is a full mix in the area of Revolutionary era homes, Pre-railroad era, Georgian, Federal and on through to modern housing developments. Many of the churches in the borough served as hospitals during the famous battle of Gettysburg, as did many of the surrounding farm houses. Real estate firms within the borough include some of the large national companies such as ERA, RE/Max, Keller Williams, Prudential, & Coldwell Banker as well as a smattering of small independents. The Gettysburg borough area is situated in the RAYAC (Realtors Association of York & Adams Counties). Many of the Realtors in the area are long time Realtors in the area. There are a few Realtors that are utilizing technology and social media sites to market listings and capture leads for potential clients. There are still a number of traditional print media real estate publications used for marketing homes for sale in the area.


Final Words

All in all from a personal point of view, Gettysburg Pa is a wonderful place to live, either raising a family, or retiring. The crime rate is very low, the people are friendly, the schools are good, housing is affordable, and there are lot opportunities for outdoor exercise as well as many good restaurants. The Majestic Theater offers top notch performances, art galleries abound, and of course the history. The Gettysburg Battlefield is visit that one will remember for a lifetime. I can tell you this; I started coming here as a child, and now, I live here. It is a place that I always remembered and held a special place in my heart, now I have the privilege of calling it home.
