Town Facts

The population of Golden is 18,955 with an average age of 25-44. Golden was founded in 1859 during the gold rush. The town was named for an early gulch miner who panned for gold in Clear Creek named Tom Golden. Golden was the site of the Territorial Capital from 1862 to 1867 but lost the state capital to Denver when Colorado achieved statehood.

History and charm make Golden, Colorado a wonderful city to visit and call home. Golden is located west of Denver and spans over 9 square miles with an elevation of 5,675 feet.  The town enjoys 255 days of sunshine every year and has an average 60.3 inches of snow annually. The hottest month of the year is July with an average temperature of 74 degrees and January is the coldest with an average temperature of 30 degrees.
Golden became home to the Colorado School of Mines in the 1870’s as evidenced by a big white “M” on the side of a mountain. Today, the institution offers degrees in engineering, environmental sciences and geology. Golden is also part of the highly acclaimed Jeffco Public School District. College graduates make up 46.3% of Golden’s residents and 92.4% have graduated from high school.

The median household income in Golden is $57,485 which is slightly higher than the Colorado average of $56,713. The average home price in Golden is $295,220 compared to Colorado’s average of $214,530. 

Attractions
There are many interesting attractions in Golden other than its quaint main street with shops and restaurants.
Nearly 3 million visitors are attracted to the Golden area each year to check out all of the great places of interest to visit.  Coors Brewery is a main attraction in Golden.

The Coors Brewery was founded in 1873 by Adolph Coors.  Coors is the largest single site brewery in the world and has been known as MillerCoors since 2008. Free tours of the brewery are offered daily between the hours of 10:00 am and 4:00 pm.  The tour is very educational and demonstrates firsthand the intricate process of brewing beer. They must be doing something right to brew 22 million barrels of beer each year.  Everyone loves the end of the tour where Coors offers free samples of fresh brewed, ice cold beer for anyone over 21 years of age.

Other attractions in Golden include Heritage Square Amusement Park, Buffalo Bill’s Grave and Museum and the Colorado Railroad Museum.
