Are you thinking of living in Perry, Georgia?

Realtor Thursday

A Conversation with Anita Clark, Warner Robins Real Estate, ColdwellBanker SSK Realtors, Warner Robins GA.

Known by many as the “Crossroads of Georgia” because it is close to several highways, Perry Georgia offers all the conveniences of city living with the charm of small town USA.  Here is a peek at what Perry GA has to offer…

History

Originally known as Wattsville, Perry GA was officially incorporated in 1824.  This delightful stop-off city was named after Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry who bravely fought in the War of 1812.

The original settlers grew and cultivated cotton on the city’s rich soils, but grains, peaches, peanuts, and pecans have also taken well to the area.  Perry was also home to some of the earliest industries such as the cotton gin.  Although Perry GA was industrious, the residents have always maintained beautifully landscaped residential areas, evident by the city winning the Championship Home Town contest in 1948.

The People

Perry GA is a growing city, boasting a population over 10,000 with a diverse mix of cultures.  Just over 30% of households have children under 18, nearly 18% are retired, and 53% of the adult population is married.  The median household income is almost $32,000.  Whatever you’re demographic, you’ll find the people are engaging, sincere, and friendly.

Attractions

Home to The Georgia National Fairgrounds & Agricenter (GNFA), Perry is the site of the annual Georgia National Fair.  The fair runs for 11 straight days starting the fifth Thursday after Labor Day.

The GNFA is used during the year for ceremonies, concerts, equine & livestock events, meetings, sporting events, and much more.

Residents, as well as visitors from all over the state, enjoy the Dogwood Festival every year in dedication of the city’s beautiful historic areas.  The annual event draws huge crowds and vendors.

Visit the historic New Perry Hotel, open to visitors since 1925.  If you want southern hospitality with modern conveniences, this is the place for your special event or weekend away.

Saddle up for the Georgia National Rodeo held each February at the GNFA.  Bring the whole family and enjoy the fun-filled entertainment of a live rodeo event.

Have a good old country jamboree at the semi-annual (April/October) Mossy Creek Barnyard Festival.  If you like arts and crafts, this is the event for you.

Things to do

Shop in Downtown Perry. Imagine the charm of quaint boutiques with the sophistication of specialty shops all masterfully woven into the recently renovated shopping district.  You can shop for wares, browse, or even relax on a street-side bench and people watch.

Take a stroll along the Historic Walking Tour and see over 50 wonderfully preserved homes, restaurants, monuments, and other man-made marvels.

Buy one-of-a-kind gifts or old-time treasures on the Perry Antiques Trail. Several antique stores, shops, and boutiques bring yesteryear back to life.

Test your aim and accuracy by golfing at one of the 3 challenging Perry golf courses or throw in a line at the 108 acre public Flat Creek fishing lake.

Schools

With over 5,600 students to accommodate, Perry has 5 public elementary schools, 1 middle school, 1 high school, and 2 private schools.  Buses are available for all Perry public schools.  Average student/teacher ratio for public schools is 13.7; for private schools the ratio is 12.2.

Fun Fact

Perry GA is the hometown of former US Senator Sam Nunn who served in Congress from 1972 to 1997.  Senator Nunn memorabilia can be viewed at the GNFA.
