Using Games to Sell Homes

SCVNGR is a game. And playing is simple: Go places. Do challenges. Earn points! But, they’ve figured out how to leverage this simple sequence of actions to create quite a stir across the country by building what they call “the game layer on top of the world”. Now they’re taking what they’ve learned about that game real-estate and bringing it to… well, real real-estate.

A bit of history: SCVNGR recently raised $4MM from Google Ventures to achieve this single, but large goal: to build the game layer on top of the world.  To achieve this, they’ve merged a fun and incredibly addictive mobile game with a powerful open enterprise gaming engine.

For a long time, enterprises have lacked the ability to link digital interactivity (clicking around on a website) with real world interaction (visiting prospective homes).  SCVNGR bridges the gap between digital interactivity and real-world interactions with a core unit they call a challenge.

Here’s how it works: you visit a place, open up the SCVNGR app and are presented with a list of quick, fun, and fast challenges to complete at that place.  One challenge might ask you to take a picture of your Frosty mustache while at Wendy’s or another challenge may ask you to snap a photo or to solve a riddle.  The challenges are based around quick, six second interactions and are designed to be fun, quick, and memorable.  Who is building these challenges?  Everyone!  Individuals and institutions (such as Harvard, Princeton, The New York Times, The Smithsonian, Warner Brothers and hundreds more…) can build on SCVNGR by adding custom challenges at their favorite places.  Everyone that plays SCVNGR can also participate in building SCVNGR.

So how does this apply to real-estate? At this year’s NAR Midyear Conference, SCVNGR officially announced its presence in the real estate space.  Imagine this—you are a broker and you have the ability to make your agent’s listings become challenge locations in a day-long mobile game where hundreds and hundreds of qualified buyers and sellers go through your listings (in the real world!) solving challenges about the agents and the properties.  An example challenge may look like: “Find the agent on the patio to help you solve this equation—Schools in the district x Blocks to the beach + Restaurants within 2 miles = your answer.” Another challenge might say, “Using your body as a ruler, what is the square footage of the Master Bedroom?”  The goal of the challenges is to form a fun connection between prospective sellers and agents and prospective buyers with listings…all while having fun!  Tie this all together with a killer prize and you’ve got yourself a one-of-a-kind mobile social promotion.

From coast to coast, SCVNGR is working with power brokerages (on an exclusive basis per region) to plan, build, and execute these sophisticated mobile / gaming / social campaigns.  SCVNGR has already partnered with leading brokerages in Florida, Texas, Arizona, Georgia and many other states and is continuing to partner with new brokerages daily.
