Q. Thanks for the interview. Can we begin by having you tell us a little bit about yourself and how long you’ve been working in and writing about this topic?

A. I have been a professional organizer for 10 years and recently a best selling author. My first book, Organize Now: a Week-by-Week Guide to Simplify your Space and your Life was released in 2008 and has since sold over 200,000 copies.  I currently have a planner being released: Organize Now: 12 Month Home and Activity Planner and my newest book, featured here, Organize Now: Your Money, Business and Career.

Q. What’s your new book about? Why did you write it? What main message will readers take away from it?

A. I wrote this book because I have a lot of business experience and background.  I have owned a few different businesses, have worked for several large corporations and have a degree in Business and Marketing.  As far as the money side of it goes, many times I see that people who have a lot of clutter in their life also have a hard time keeping up with their bills and managing their time.  I believe when you take control of your time this frees up time to organize your space.  I also believe that when you learn to manage your time you learn to manage your finances better.

Q. What inspired you to write this book?

After 10 years of helping clients get organized I realized that a big part of getting your life organized relates to organizing your money and your job!  These two aspects of our lives are so important and people get overwhelmed trying to keep it all straight. They want someone to tell them how to do it and that’s what this book does.

Q. What were some of the greatest discoveries, lessons, or findings you came across while doing research and writing this book?

This book was the hardest book I have written thus far for the simple fact that I had to do a TON of research and interview a panel of experts. I am an expert in organizing not finances or human resources so I had to do my homework.  In doing so I learned SO much to benefit my own life.  Especially from the chapters regarding organizing my estate, financial goals, children’s finances, and Anti-Identity Theft Plan.

Q. What do you feel sets your book apart from others in the same genre?

Unlike some organizing books this is not a long, drawn-out conversation about how and why to get organized.  My books are set up as a “step-by-step guide” to help get all areas of your life organized.  Each chapter has a neat, efficient checklist of each step that should be taken in order to get a specific space or area of your life organized.  I find that people that are overwhelmed by clutter look for the fastest, most direct approach to eliminating clutter and my books do just that!

Q. What does your typical day look like?

About 4 days a week I get my children on the bus and then head to a client’s home or office to work with them hands on.  We sort clutter and set up homes (storage spaces for everything they own) and systems for everything they are keeping.  After that appointment I head back to my office to answer emails and plug away at my LONG To Do list that includes a lot of publicity efforts for my books.  Then my children come home and I try to stay out of my office to focus on them–making dinner, homework, etc. I dedicate one whole day per week working in my office or doing a speaking engagement.

Q. If someone were a complete noobie when it comes to the topic of your book, what are some steps they could take to dive in and get more educated in this area. (Besides reading your book of course!)

-They could hire a Professional Organizer to work with them.

-They could research “organizing tips” on the web.

-They could go to www.jenniferfordberry.com or follow me on Facebook to receive more tips and resources about how to get organized.

-There are now TV shows such as Clean Sweep and Hoarders. Also a brand new magazine called Organize is coming out.

NAPO-National Association of Professional Organizers and Online Organizing.com have a ton of information as well!

Q. If you could write 1 Golden Rule to take away from your book, what would it be and why?
